Peer Advocates Mentorship Expands SRHR and HIV Awareness Among Young People

Between July and September 2024, Children’s Dignity Forum (CDF) supported ongoing peer advocates mentorship to strengthen Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and HIV awareness among adolescents and young people.

CDF empowered 40 peer educators to lead peer-to-peer education across schools, churches, community meetings, recreational spaces, and door-to-door outreach. Through these platforms, more than 2,300 adolescents and young people were reached with information on HIV prevention, family planning, stigma reduction, and access to SRHR services.

Supported through mentorship and stipends, peer educators created safe and relatable spaces for discussion. Many young people began seeking advice, condoms, and health services more openly, indicating positive behavioural change and increased confidence in accessing care. Improved access to HIV testing also contributed to early diagnosis and timely linkage to treatment for several young individuals.

The outreach covered 15 schools and 12 churches, as well as workplace and community settings, to reach young people with limited time or access to health information. Peer educators highlighted that engaging adolescents in familiar environments helped break stigma and build trust.

While cultural resistance and limited resources posed challenges, CDF continues to strengthen dialogue with parents, community leaders, and local actors to create supportive environments where young people can access SRHR information and services without fear. Through peer-led approaches, CDF is contributing to child protection, youth empowerment, and the prevention of HIV and abuse among young people.
