Community Mobilization in Tarime Promotes SRH, HIV Services, and Child Protection

On 27 September 2024, the Children’s Dignity Forum (CDF), conducted a community mobilization event at Sirari Market in Tarime District to promote Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and HIV services.

The event brought together parents, community leaders, traditional and religious leaders, adolescents, young people, women, men, and boys to raise awareness, eliminate harmful myths, and encourage shared responsibility in reproductive health and child protection. The gathering created an open space for dialogue on issues affecting children and young women, including child abuse, child marriage, and female genital mutilation (FGM).

Community members accessed key services such as HIV testing and counselling, family planning education, and blood donation drive. Out of 307 participants, 135 people voluntarily underwent HIV testing, while oral and blood-based self-testing kits were distributed. Individuals who tested positive were immediately referred to nearby health facilities for follow-up care.

Health officials led sessions focused on maternal and child health, emphasizing the importance of informed decision-making and mutual support between men and women in family planning. Myths surrounding contraceptives were addressed, with participants encouraged to seek accurate information from health professionals rather than relying on rumours.

Traditional and religious leaders also contributed to the discussions, acknowledging progress made within the community while highlighting the continued need to address harmful practices such as Female Genital Mutilation. Their involvement reinforced the role of community leadership in protecting children’s rights and promoting safe and healthy practices.

Through community dialogue, health services, and collaboration with local leaders, CDF continues to support community-led action to stop child abuse, strengthen child protection, and advance human rights for children in Tanzania.
